In each arts category of the Reflections Program, it is important for all students to submit the best presentation possible.  Besides for judging purposes, the musical composition tape entries are used to prepare our master tape, CDs, and cassettes for the traveling exhibit and the website gallery. Below are some suggestions for producing good-quality recordings:

  • Record only on a name-brand, new cassette of C-60 length or less (not on C-90 or 120).

  • Use only high bias or chrome formula tape and be sure your cassette deck is set for that. Don’t use “Metal” formula tape. Don’t record at too loud a level (in the “red” on the meter).

  • Definitely record with Dolby B Noise Reduction!

  • Before recording, try to make the room you record in as quiet as possible. Close the windows and turn off all noise-making devices, such as air conditioners, fans, telephones, and such.

  • Make a short test and listen to it. Then rewind and start over. Let the tape run a few seconds, then state your name and the title of the piece. Wait about 10 or 15 seconds, then start the music. Don’t start right on the plastic head-leader!

  • Let at least 10 seconds of silence go by after the piece before stopping the machine. This avoids the end being ruined by machine pops, clicks, or other noises.

  • Remove the safety record-tabs on the thin end of the cassette when totally done taping to eliminate the possibility of the composition being recorded over accidentally.

Your students might not have the equipment for sophisticated recording, but if they follow the steps as closely as possible, they will increase the quality of their recording. Please note: If the musical composition is for piano, please encourage entrants to perform on one that is well-tuned. Use of a quality instrument and good recording techniques will enhance performance and , for winners, make a good presentation on the website.
