for an award created by National PTA to honor a local PTA that demonstrates superior commitment to parent/family involvement and education partnerships.

The Phoebe Apperson Hearst–National PTA Excellence in Education Partnership Award recognizes PTAs whose collaborative efforts with parents, families, educators, and community members promote parent/family involvement in ongoing programs that encourage student success.

 

Benefits of the award

1.      A cash award of $2,000 for use in a PTA program that promotes parent involvement.

2.      Two expense-paid trips to the National PTA convention (one for the PTA president or designee and one for a representative of the collaborative group).

3.      Participation in national convention activities.

4.      A mention in National PTA publications.

The winning PTA will be recognized at the 2004 National PTA Convention in Anaheim, California.

 Goal of the Award

To recognize a local PTA whose collaborative efforts with parents, families, educators, and community members promote parent/family involvement in ongoing programs that encourage student success.

Who Should Apply?

A local PTA in good standing with the state PTA and National PTA. Local PTAs may submit applications to their state PTA, and the state PTA may submit one application for national consideration.

What the Award Provides

The national winner will

1.      Receive two expense-paid trips, one for the PTA president or designee and one for a representative of the collaborative group, to the 2004 National PTA Convention in Anaheim, California.

2.      Participate in convention activities as requested.

3.      Be featured in National PTA publications.

4.      Receive $2,000 for a PTA program promoting parent involvement.

There will be four honorable mention recipients and they will receive $500 each. The national winner and four honorable mentions will each receive a commemorative award. All applicants for the award will receive a certificate of participation.

Selection Criteria

Prepare a narrative for each of the following selection criteria:

1.      Describe your program. Who is the collaborative group? Which National PTA Standards for Parent/Family Involvement Programs were used and how? (See box below.) How does the program fulfill the National PTA Objects or Mission as reflected in the work of our founders, Phoebe Apperson Hearst and Alice McLellan Birney? (40 points)

2.      How and why was the program selected? How have you sustained the program? How did you evaluate your program? What are your next collaborative steps? How are you going to use the award to sustain the program? (50 points)

3.      Why should you receive this award? (10 points)

National PTA Standards for Parent/Family Involvement Programs

1.       Communicating¾Communication between home and school is regular, two-way, and meaningful.

2.       Parenting¾Parenting skills are promoted and supported.

3.       Student Learning¾Parents play an integral role in assisting student learning.

4.       Volunteering¾Parents are welcome in the school, and their support and assistance are sought.

5.       School Decision Making and Advocacy¾Parents are full partners in the decisions that affect children and families.

6.       Collaborating with Community¾Community resources are used to strengthen schools, families, and student learning.
